- Story Text: An Israeli army officer who took a wrong turn into Jenin in the occupied West Bank on Monday (August 27) was picked up by Palestinian security forces who handed him back unharmed in a new sign of cooperation with Israel.
Israeli website NRG accessed video footage taken on a mobile telephone showing the soldier being led by Palestinian policemen to a taxi, which transported him to a nearby Israeli checkpoint.
The Israeli army said the soldier inadvertently drove past one of its checkpoints near the town of Jenin, which has been considered a Palestinian militant stronghold by Israel since the start of an uprising in 2000.
A crowd in the city overturned and set light to the officer's abandoned car, tearing pieces of metal off the vehicle after a fire truck doused the flames.
The Islamic Jihad militant group said it had "abducted the soldier who had sneaked into the city", but its fighters were "surprised by members of the Preventive Security Service who surrounded them and took him".
An army spokeswoman in Tel Aviv, in comments that stopped short of denying the soldier had been seized by Islamic Jihad, said the military was unaware of any such occurrence. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
