- Story Text: Ground fighting continued in southern Lebanon on Thursday (August 3) as Israel's offensive against Hizbollah entered its 23rd day.
Initial reports said one Israeli soldier was killed and four were lightly wounded.
The soldier was killed in the border town of Aita al-Shaab when an anti-tank missile struck the house where the men were staying.
The death brings to 37 the number of Israeli soldiers killed in more than three weeks of fighting Hizbollah guerrillas.
Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora said on Thursday that the offensive has killed more than 900 people, wounded 3,000 -- with one-third of the casualties children under 12 -- and displaced one-quarter of the population, or one million people.
People in northern Israel were bracing themselves for another wave of Hizbollah rocket attacks on Thursday after more than 200 landed on Wednesday -- the most intense one-day barrage of the conflict, killing one person and wounding scores.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Wednesday that Israel's offensive in Lebanon had "entirely destroyed" the infrastructure of Hizbollah, citing what he said was the reduced number of rockets being fired.
The guerrilla group said it had increased its attacks "after the enemy went too far in targetting civilians". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
