- Story Text: Israeli troops killed two Gaza gunmen on Saturday (August 25) as they attempted to infiltrate an Israeli community across the border fence from the northern Gaza Strip, Israeli army and Palestinian militant sources said.
An Israeli army spokeswoman said two Palestinian gunmen climbed up a ladder and used a rope to climb down a 5-meter-high cement wall separating Israel and Gaza. The spokesman said the militants intended to enter the Israeli community of Netiv Ha'asara, north of the Gaza frontier fence.
The men attempted to raid the Erez border terminal, which houses the Israeli District Coordination Office that manages Israel's activities in Gaza, an army spokeswoman said. The gunmen opened fire at the facility and lightly wounded a soldier before they were shot and killed.
A spokesman for the Popular Resistance Committees Gaza militant group said that one of its gunmen and another belonging to the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine were killed in a "martyrdom operation against the Zionist entity."
Israeli security deployed forces around Gaza and conducted searches to look for more militants and explosives.
Bomb disposal experts operated a robot to strip the bodies and discover any explosives attached to them.
The bodies are due to be transferred to Gaza through the Erez border crossing after a thorough inspection, a military official said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
