- Story Text: Jordan's Prime minister Nader Dahabi told lawmakers on Sunday (January 4) that his government would reconsider ties with Israel following an increase in violence on the Gaza Strip.
In a country with more than 55 percent of the population of Palestinian origin, public pressure has been mounting on the pro-western authorities since Israel launched attacks on Gaza. More than 450 people died in Hamas-run Gaza since attacks started on December 27.
"The government maintains all available options to evaluate ties with whoever, particularly Israel, and reconsider it due to higher national interests," said Dahabi during a parliament session in which a number of lawmakers signed a petition calling for scrapping the 1994 peace treaty with Israel and kicking its ambassador from the kingdom.
"We will not keep quiet regarding this situation. We will not be quiet regarding the deteriorating humanitarian condition in Gaza and we will not be quiet regarding this threat that touches on the security and stability of this region," said Dahabi, whose remarks are expected to lead to concrete action on strategic relations with the Jewish state.
