- Story Text: Israeli residents of rocket hit city of Ashkelon reject calls for cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
Residents of an Israeli town hit by rocket fire have ruled out a possible cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
Ashkelon is a frequent target for attacks by militants over the border in Gaza.
On Friday (January 16) local people digested news that Israeli envoys have been sent to discuss truce terms with Hamas.
But many are not convinced that a cease-fire is the answer.
Avi Nagar believes Hamas were to blame for ending the previous truce.
Fellow resident Moshe Bloom says the Israeli army should finish its work in Gaza first.
More than 1,100 people have been killed during three weeks of fighting as Israel hunts down Hamas militants in a bid to prevent further rocket attacks on Israeli towns.
Monday's inauguration of new U.S. President Barack Obama is being seen by some as a desirable deadline for Israel finally to bow to mounting international pressure and call off its attacks. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
