- Story Text: Argentina marked the 20th anniversary of the Israeli embassy bombing in Buenos Aires on Friday (March 16), a tragedy that killed 29 and injured over 200.
A siren was sounded to signal the time that the car bomb exploded.
Relatives of the victims gathered alongside officials and survivors to pay their respects at the site of the destroyed embassy, where a peace park now stands.
Argentina's Justice Minister Julio Alak expressed his regret over the loss of life that day.
"We want to say to the public and the government of Israel that we profoundly regret that a country that is a friend and close to us - a country that has taken in thousands of Argentines, who have chosen it as their place in the world - has suffered the consequences of terrorism on Argentine territory," said Alak.
Those responsible for the 1992 attack have never been found.
"Unfortunately, today we can only talk of memory. Not of truth because we have not found it, nor justice either. Because those who are responsible for this brutality still have not been found, or judged, or locked up," said Alak.
While authorities have said they believe Hezbollah, with Iranian support, may be behind attack, nothing has been proven.
The actual anniversary is on Saturday (March 17), but the ceremony was brought forward to respect the Jewish Sabbath. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
