- Story Text: Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak signed a bilateral security treaty with his Colombian counterpart, Juan Carlos Pinzon, in Bogota on Monday (April 16).
The two countries have vowed to work more closely together in security strategies and to fight against illegal armed groups.
The move comes a day after Israel refused entry of dozens of international pro-Palestinian activists at Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv on Sunday (April 15), claiming them to be a potential threat to security.
"Our present government, headed by Netanyahu, once again we proposed to the Palestinians let's strike a deal, come to the negotiating room, sit around the table, put all the demands on the table; let's solve it. We could not move them there until now, and that is the real source of the problem not the effect that some activists are trying to come in disorderly manner to Israel and being blocked," said Barak.
Colombia also has ongoing security struggles of its own, as it tries to curb the activities of drug traders and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
"These meetings and the conversations are good so that we can discuss the importance of moving towards a dialogue that would not simply stay on commercial issues and the common efforts against terrorism, but that would also allow us to have a relationship on a strategic level," said Pinzon.
Barak said he was also in Colombia to learn about how the South American country had managed to improve national security in recent years. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
