- Story Text: Animals at Israel's Safari zoo cooled off on Thursday (July 12) with frozen fruit and fish lunches, while Israelis sizzled during an ongoing heat wave that was expected to last through the weekend.
Zoo keepers at the Ramat Gan Safari offered the bears, monkeys and lemurs frozen delights to ease the heat. Some were given frozen fruits, others were given frozen fish as temperatures climbed above 30 degrees Celsius with very high humidity.
Syrian bears, which have lived in Israel since biblical times but are now extinct in the wild, chewed on the bucket size icicle treats made of fish, vegetables and sauce.
"To make things special, and even better for them, and to cool down their core body temperature, we give all of them little popsicles, and icicles and fish-sicles and fruit-sicles, all kinds of frozen treats with fish and fruit flavouring. And they absolutely and really enjoy playing with these things as you see, and not only do they have fun, but it really cools them off, because by getting these low temperatures into their mouths it also reaches the parts of the body physiologically which deal with the perception of heat," explained the zoo's curator Amelia Turkel. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
