- Story Text: Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip launched rockets at southern Israel on Monday (October 8) in what they said was a response to an air strike that wounded two militants and eight bystanders on Sunday.
One of the rockets fired landed on a Kibbutz in the Eshkol area south of Ashkelon, killing a goat at a petting zoo and forcing the owners to euthanise another due to its injuries.
"(At) six o'clock in the morning a barrage of Qassam rockets and mortar shells fell on the regional council in Eshkol. Until now 50-55 Qassam and mortar shells exploded in the region. To our luck it is only property damage," said Chaim Yaleem, head of the local council.
A team of soldiers and security personnel searched the area for shrapnel and damage.
The head f the security at Sufa Kibbutz, Noam Sagiv, said it was a "miracle" there were no human casualties.
"It's a morning that started with rocket hits in and around the populated area, hitting the infrastructure of electricity, roads and luckily and by miracle there was no damage to the people," said Sagiv.
The armed wing of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist faction that controls the Gaza Strip, said it was involved in the attack together with members of the Islamic Jihad militant group. Hamas has not acknowledged launching rockets and mortars at Israel since June.
An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed that some rockets landed in areas close to the border with the Gaza Strip.
A Statement issued by the army said that the IDF has responded to the rocket attacks, adding that it "will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli civilians, and will operate against anyone who uses terror against the State of Israel." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
