- Story Text: Turkish President Abdullah Gul condemned Israeli strikes on Gaza on Thursday (November 14) and said he expects Washington to put pressure on Israel to ease the crisis.
U.S. President Barack Obama spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday (November 13) and reiterated U.S. support for Israel's right to self-defense in light of rocket attacks from Gaza, the White House said.
"We are monitoring Israeli attacks on Gaza with great concern. I strongly condemn the attacks because such an attack had been expected," Gul said in a news conference with Congolese President Joseph Kabila.
"These attacks might get worse in the future but everybody is expecting the United States to warn Israel. I hope that this will not create a new problem within the fragile nature of the Middle East," he said.
Israel said a strike that killed Hamas military commander Ahmed Al-Jaabari came in response to more than 100 missiles fired out of Gaza this week.
On Thursday, Israeli warplanes bombed targets in and around Gaza city with the Palestinian death toll rising to 13, while a Hamas rocket killed three Israelis in the town of Kiryat Malachi, 25 km (15 miles) north of Gaza. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
