- Story Text: Dozens of protesters in Hong Kong condemned Israeli attacks in Gaza Strip and showed solidarity to Palestinians on Sunday (November 18).
About 30 demonstrators, shouting "long live Gaza" and "end the occupation", marched to the city's Israel Consulate General.
Forty-eight Palestinians, about half of them civilians, including 13 children, have been killed in Israel's raids, Palestinian officials said. More than 500 rockets fired from Gaza have hit Israel, killing three people and injuring dozens.
The protesters in Hong Kong included 28-year-old Palestinian Rami El-Ashi, who has been in contact with his family in Gaza.
"I've heard that, I mean, where my family lives, there's bombing happening around everywhere, they've cut off the electricity, they've cut off the heating. And I need to do what I can to at least support them and stand by them from here in Hong Kong," said El-Ashi, who said he has lived in Hong Kong since he was two years old.
Palestinian Melkar Muallem showed his support for his countrymen.
"We want to deliver a word for the whole world, that we are still alive. And no matter what Israel will do, they can never break us. And we will retaliate. We will do whatever we can with our own hands to gain our normal rights and our rights for peace and a normal life," Muallem said.
Hong Kong citizen Dawnie Ng said she took to the streets to show Palestinians that they were not alone.
"Because we heard from the news, in Gaza, we know that the people there they don't have their homeland. That's why we want, just want to let them know they are not alone, we all support them," Ng said.
Israel had unleashed intensive air strikes on Wednesday (November 14), killing the military commander of the Hamas Islamist group that governs Gaza and spurns peace with the Jewish state.
Israel's declared goal is to deplete Gaza arsenals and press Hamas into stopping cross-border rocket fire that has plagued Israeli border towns for years and which has now targeted Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
