- Story Text: Over 5,000 Indonesians marched through the streets of Jakarta on Sunday (November 18) to protest against Israeli military strikes in Gaza.
Forty-seven Palestinians, about half of them civilians, including 12 children, have been killed in Israel's raids, Palestinian officials said. More than 500 rockets fired from Gaza have hit Israel, killing three people and injuring dozens.
Indonesian protesters marched to the U.S. embassy, carrying Indonesian and Palestinian flags and posters condemning Israel.
"We are here to show our support to our Palestinian brothers, and Israelis must stop the military strikes and occupation," said protest coordinator, Yulian Gunawan.
Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation and has no diplomatic relationship with Israel.
Israel unleashed its massive air campaign on Wednesday (November 14), killing a leading militant of the Hamas Islamist group that controls Gaza and rejects Israel's existence, with the declared goal of deterring gunmen in the coastal enclave from launching rockets that have plagued its southern communities for years. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
