- Story Text: Muslims and opposition politicians in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo staged an anti-Israel rally on Friday (November 23) outside the Devatagaha Mosque mosque.
A Reuters cameraman estimated the crowd at about 200 people.
Protesters carried placards, chanting '"we are with you people of Palestine" and "protect Palestinians right to live".
The protest comes as Israeli gunfire at the Gaza border killed one Palestinian on Friday and wounded several others, medics said, two days after a ceasefire between the territory's Islamist rulers Hamas and Israel took hold.
Egypt brokered a ceasefire on Wednesday (21 November) after eight days of conflict left 163 Palestinians and six Israelis dead.
Deep mistrust on both sides cast doubt on how long the deal can last.
"Israelis have violated all human rights of the Palestinian people. As Sri Lankans we have risen against this suppression in support of the Palestinian struggle. World powers are staying quiet as Israel, the agent of the world policeman America, carry out genocidal attacks against the Palestinians" Sri Lankan opposition politician Mujibar Rahuman said.
According to the terms of the accord, both Israelis and Palestinians agreed to stop their hostilities. However, the brief document said details on access to the tense border zone would be worked out in the days ahead.
The truce brokered by Egypt's new Islamist leaders, working with the United States, headed off an Israeli invasion of Gaza. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
