- Story Text: Protesters gathered in the Bolivian capital on Thursday (November 23) to denounce Israel after eight days of bloody conflict on the Gaza Strip was halted the day before with a cease-fire.
Veiled women were among crowds baring posters and banners accusing Israel of state-sanctioned terrorism.
The demonstration followed similar protests in neighbouring Argentina and Venezuela earlier in the week.
Gaza-born Bolivia resident Dr. Ayman Altaramsi stomped angrily on an Israeli flag in which someone had written the words "Obama" and "USA."
"The Palestinian community is meeting today in repudiation and emphatic condemnation of the massacres committed by the Israeli regime against the people of Gaza, killing hundreds and wounding thousands of Palestinian children, elderly people and women," Altaramsi said.
Bolivian and Palestinian flags flew in the plaza where the demonstrators congregated.
Demonstrators also used the occasion to affirm their support for a Palestinian state. Emilio Madrid called on the United Nations to offer its backing to the Palestinian's fight for statehood in an upcoming meeting of the general assembly.
"We are making our backing known because there is plain recognition of the Palestinian state and we think that on November 29, there has to be a United Nations assembly in which all the world's countries should give their support for the recognition of the state of Palestine, for a secular, democratic and non-racist Palestine, which was the banner of the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization) in the 1970s," he said.
An Egypt and U.S.-brokered cease-fire has been in effect since late Wednesday (November 21), averting a full-scale Israeli ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.
