- Story Text: Several dozen Islamists protested on Monday (March 4) outside the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv ahead of a scheduled visit by U.S. President Barak Obama later in the month.
Chanting and waving Islamic flags, about 100 members of the northern wing of the Islamic movement in Israel gathered outside the embassy located at Tel Aviv's busy beach promenade.
Israeli security guarded as protest.
"We are here because we hear the U.S. President Obama will visit Jerusalem and we are hearing that he is going to visit the occupied al-Aqsa mosque during his visit," said Raed Salah, head of the northern wing of the Islamic movement in Israel.
Another protester said President Obama must bear the consequences of a visit to the al-Aqsa mosque and Western Wall in Jerusalem.
"We are here about the consequences of Barak Obama's visit to Israel that he may visit the al-Aqsa mosque or the al Buraq wall or Jerusalem".
Obama's plan to visit Israel and the West Bank on March 20 has raised speculation of a new U.S. push to revive Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, stalled since 2010 in a dispute over Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank.
The trip will be his first to Israel since taking office in 2009. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
