- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang oversaw a signing ceremony Wednesday (May 8) between the two countries in Beijing.
The leaders shook hands in front of the Great Hall of the People and held a brief meeting before overseeing a signing ceremony.
The first two agreements signed included agricultural and technological co-operation, while the second was regarding scientific and financial cooperation.
Netanyahu's visit, the first trip by a top Israeli leader to China since former Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert visited in 2007 will be focused on trade, though experts have also said he is likely to discuss Iran's nuclear programme with China.
China, Iran's top oil customer and a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, has opposed unilateral sanctions on Tehran such as those imposed by Washington and the European Union and has called repeatedly for talks to resolve the stand-off over Iran's nuclear programme.
Syria and Palestine are also expected to be on the agenda.
Netanyahu's trip also coincides with a visit by Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas as China tries to shore up its role in a region where its diplomatic influence is limited.
China has tried at various times over the years to mediate in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but with little apparent success.
Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with President Xi Jinping on Thursday (May 9). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
