- Story Text: A region in the Israeli desert has broken the world record for a category more usually associated with wetter countries. Arava in Israel has grown, made and tossed the world's largest salad.
It took an awful lot of locally-grown vegetables and even more chopping by hundreds of schoolchildren and eager spectators but on Thursday (January 31) in the Arava region of Israel row-upon-row of cucumbers, pile-upon-pile of peppers and basket-upon-basket of tomatoes were all chopped up before being tossed into the world's biggest salad.
The previous world record, held by a 2,476 kilogramme (5500 lb.) Caesar Salad from the United Kingdom, fell late in the day as eager onlookers helped spoon and rake more than three tonnes of red, orange, yellow and green peppers, cherry and regular tomatoes and cucumbers into a massive container.
The result: an Arava salad weighing in at 3,020 kilogrammes (6600 lbs).
With dressings for the salad provided by a local catering company, spectators who stood around watching for most of the day got a chance to tuck in. But not before the chefs had registered their record-breaking creation with The Guinness Book of World Records. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
