- Story Text: Lebanese security forces examine the debris of an apparent failed rocket on their soil, after Israeli officials say rockets were fired from Lebanon into northern Israel.
Lebanese security forces on Sunday (December 29, 2013) were seen examining the debris of what appeared to be a failed rocket, after Israeli officials said that two rockets fired from Lebanon earlier struck northern Israel.
Armed security forces were seen in the hilly area of Marjayoun in south west Lebanon near the Israeli border and the disputed Golan Heights area.
Israeli officials earlier on Sunday said that the attack caused no injuries or damage, and Israel's military responded with artillery fire across the border.
The Lebanese rockets landed near the town of Kiryat Shmona, the military said in a statement, adding that it "responded with artillery fire towards the source of the launch".
A Reuters witness in the Lebanon frontier area said 33 Israeli shells hit near two southern border towns. A Lebanese security confirmed the count.
The Israeli-Lebanese border has been largely quiet since Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia fought a 34-day war in 2006.
But tension spiked this month when a Lebanese soldier killed an Israeli soldier across the border fence, after which a U.N. peacekeeping force met both sides to restore calm.
Officials suggested at the time that the shooting had been the isolated action of an individual. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
