- Story Text: A rocket attack on Israel's northern border with Lebanon drew a swift response on Wednesday (December 28) when Israeli aircraft attacked a Palestinian group's training base south of Beirut. "We think we know that it is the terrorist factions in Lebanon," said Major General Udi Adam, Israel's army commander of the northern command. An Israeli army spokeswoman said Israel's late night attack targeted a training base used by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC). Earlier the army had said the target was a base belonging to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a separate group. There was no immediate information on casualties or damage. Late on Tuesday, three rockets were fired into the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shemona from Lebanon, slamming into residential areas and lightly wounding three people, Israel media reported. There was no claim of responsibility for the attack. Residents of the northern city of Kiryat Shmona were instructed to leave their homes and spend the night in shelters. On Wednesday morning, residents gathered to observe the damage caused to a house directly hit by one of the rockets. "Israel has a right to defend its citizens. The Lebanese government is responsible for not dismantling terror organisations," an Israeli spokeswoman said.
The PFLP-GC won notoriety with an attack in 1987 in which fighters hang-glided into Israel, killing six soldiers and helping spark the first Palestinian intifada, or uprising. The Syrian-backed group is opposed to peace talks with Israel and has bases in Lebanon.
