- Story Text: Israeli President Shimon Peres met with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Tuesday (April 8) in Beijing.
Peres was welcomed in a ceremony where he and Xi inspected honour guards, before holding bilateral talks with both Chinese and Israeli delegations present.
The two leaders are expected to discuss cooperation in science and technology, Jerusalem Post reported.
Peres is scheduled to hold talks with Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang on Wednesday (April 9).
A Hong Kong newspaper reported that Peres opened a Sina Weibo account, China's version of Twitter, two days before his arrival.
"Shalom, my Chinese friends," he posted for 50,000 followers, according to the South China Morning Post, using a popular Hebrew greeting that means "peace".
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited China in May of last year to meet with top leaders.
During their talks Xi had urged Netanyahu to restart peace talks with the Palestinians as soon as possible, just days after Xi met with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.
China has traditionally had a low profile in Middle East diplomacy, but is keen to assert its role as a force in international politics.
Beijing has maintained close relations with the Palestinians for decades. In recent years it has also cultivated ties with Israel, though Israel is wary of China's links with Iran. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
