A cargo plane carrying Italian humanitarian aid for Gaza landed in Tel Aviv on Tuesday (August 5), as Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian militants entered a 72-hour truce mediated by Egypt with a view to encouraging negotiations on a more enduring end to the month-old Gaza war.
The Italian embassy said the shipment contained 30 tons of material worth 350,000 euros (468,500 US dollar), including medical equipment, hygienic kits, tents, 6 generators , water tanks and water purification stations. It will be handed to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) on Wednesday (August 6), the embassy also said.
Italian deputy foreign minister Lapo Pistelli it was the first plane delivering European humanitarian aid for Gaza.
Pistelli called on the parties to resume negotiations.
"Our message is, please, hold on, hold on, because people need the quiet of weapons, the quiet of arms, they need to rest and you all need to go back to the table of negotiations," Pistelli said.
Israel pulled its ground forces out of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday and started a 72-hour ceasefire with Hamas mediated by Egypt as a first step towards negotiations on a more enduring end to the month-old war. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
