- Story Text: Citing security concerns over continued rocket fire into Israel, Israeli police banned an anti-war protest planned for Tel Aviv on Saturday (August 9), saying regulations prohibited large gatherings in areas at risk of attack.
However, a few hundred anti-war demonstrators still decided to go to Rabin Square to protest against Israel's ongoing military operation in Gaza.
"Today there were supposed to be a bigger demonstration. The police have announced because of the security and safety of the demonstrators, it's.. the police doesn't allowed to have a big demonstration.
Nonetheless as you can see couple of hundreds of people still decided to come protest against the cycle of violence, and against the siege of Gaza and bombing of Gaza and basically
calling for the ending of the cycle of violence here," Halleli Pinson, a demonstrator, said.
The anti-war demonstration was met by a few dozen protesters who were supporting Israel's military operation in Gaza. Israeli police separated the two groups.
Gaza officials say the war between Israel and militants in Gaza has killed 1,888 Palestinians, most of them civilians.
Israel says 64 of its soldiers and three civilians have died in the fighting that started on July 8 following a surge in Palestinian rocket salvoes into Israel. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
