- Story Text: Israel's Defence Forces (IDF) on Monday (September 8) confirmed that a submarine it had ordered from Germany had left Kiel on the Baltic Sea for Israel.
According to a written statement released by the IDF on September 8, the "INS Tanin" is an AIP Dolphin 2 class submarine and was en route to Israel where it was expected "in approximately 20 days."
"INS Tanin is the first Israeli Navy submarine that possesses air- independent propulsion (AIP), and is the fourth submarine Israel has acquired. The submarine is set to sail over 4000 miles from Germany to Israel," the statement said, adding "aboard the submarine is a crew consisting of around 50 crew members."
Video footage released by the IDF on September 8 showed a ceremony in Kiel with German and Israel military officials watching as a plain clothes official lowered the German flag on the submarine before an Israeli navy officer saluted next to his country's flag.
A spokesman for ThyssenKrupp on Tuesday (September 9) confirmed by telephone that the ceremony took place on June 30.
On July 16, 2014, Reuters reported that the German economy ministry had informed members of the Bundestag, or parliament, that it had granted permission for the delivery of a submarine to Israel.
Reuters at the time cited "security sources" saying the submarine was a Dolphin AIP class vessel made by ThyssenKrupp subsidiary Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft (HDW) and that the boat had been handed to the Israeli navy in Kiel on June 30.
The sources also said the submarine was the first of three Israel had ordered. At the time, neither ThyssenKrupp or the German government were willing to comment on the export permission. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
