A Palestinian minister died shortly after being hit and shoved by Israeli soldiers during a protest on Wednesday (December 10) in the occupied West Bank, a Reuters photographer who witnessed the incident and a medic said.
Ziad Abu Ein, a minister without portfolio, was rushed by ambulance from the scene, in the village of Turmusiya, but died en route to the nearby Palestinian city of Ramallah.
Abu Ein spoke to Palestinian media shortly during the protest: "They are assaulting us this is the terrorism of the occupation. This is a terrorist army...practices terrorism against the Palestinian people. We came to our Palestinian land to plant, olive trees and they are attacking us from the first moment. Nobody threw a stone and nobody attacked back and this is the terrorist occupation army practising suppression and terrorism against the Palestinian people".
About a hundred foreign and Palestinian activists with the Committee to Resist Settlements and the Wall, the government-run protest organisation Abu Ein headed, were en route to plant trees and protest near an Israeli settlement when they were stopped at an improvised checkpoint, eyewitnesses said.
The soldiers fired tear gas at the protesters and began scuffling with them and Abu Ein, who became weary and was rushed away in an ambulance, the Reuters photographer said.
An Israeli army spokesperson said they were looking into the reported incident and did not immediately provide information.
Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas called Abu Ein's death "a barbaric act which we cannot be silent about or accept," in an official statement.
Abbas announced three days of national mourning and said he would take "necessary steps" after an investigation.
Palestinians in Ramallah closed shops in protest at the minister's death and youths threw stones at Israeli soldiers guarding a Jewish settlement outside the city, Palestinian security sources said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
