- Story Text: Israel has inaugurated the Arrow missile system in a
ceremony attended by United States Ambassador Martin Indyk and
and top military officials.
The multi-million dollar Arrow missile development
programme began more than a decade ago.
Israel inaugurated its arrow missile on Monday (March
14) after more then a decade of development.
The multi-million-dollar Arrow missile development
programme began more than a decade ago as part of U.S.
President Ronald Reagan's "Star Wars" Strategic Defence
Initiative, but really took off after Iraq fired 39 Scud
missiles at Israel in the 1991 Gulf War.
The U.S.-supplied Patriot missiles proved disappointing in
that conflict, and the United States and Israel began
developing the Arrow battery, designed to track incoming
missiles and guide an anti-missile missile at a speed of two
miles (3.2 km) per second to within 13 feet (4 metres) of
the target.
In January 1999 the Arrow was declared operational after
it successfully hit a practice target over the Mediterranean.
U.S.Ambassador Martin Indyk, who attended the
inauguration, said he was proud of the Arrow's achievements.
"I would like to say, from all of us to all of you on this
occasion, a hearty "Mazel Tov" ("congratulations" in Hebrew),
he said.
The missile was designed to intercept incoming missiles
at altitudes of between 10 and 40 km (6 and 25 miles).
