- Story Text: M. Ernesto Thalmann, United Nations Secretary-General U Thant's personal representative, is in Jerusalem on a two-week fact-finding mission. M. Thalmann arrived yesterday (Tuesday) and has already had talks with Israeli foreign minister Abba Eban.
M. Thalmann will compile information on the Jerusalem question for a report U Thant will be making to the U.N. later. He was met at the airport in Jerusalem by the assistant Director-General of the Israeli foreign ministry, Mr Yosef Tekoa. M. Thalmann last night held an initial working session with Mr Tekoa at a Jerusalem hotel.
Later, foreign minister Abba Eban told M. Thalmann that Jerusalem had now emerged into a brighter future after "20 years of darkness."
"Instead of division there is now unity, instead of military barriers and tension there is now peace and stability; where the holy places had been defiled, access to them is now assured," he tod M. Thalmann.
Mr Eban also said Israel was prepared to enter into "constructive dialogues" with any world interests concerned in the various holy places.
M. Thalmann is on a two-week visit to the city.
