Israel held a ground breaking ceremony on Tuesday (March 13) for 3,000 new apartments to be built in Pisgat Zeev in East Jerusalem for Jewish settlers, despite criticism from the United States (US).
Some of the housing will be set aside for the Soviet Jews currently flooding into the country.
Pisgat Zeev is located on the Arab side of the line which divides Palestinian and Israeli Jerusalem and is already home to thousands of Israelis settlers. Recently, US President George Bush caused a furore when he referred to the outlying neighborhoods of Jerusalem as Israeli "settlements." He has said the United States opposes any increase in the number of jews settled in the Palestinian area of the city - captured in the 1967 war and declared part of the capital in 1980.
On Tuesday (March 13), Housing Minister David Levy attended the ceremony and reaffirmed the Israeli position, saying: "Jerusalem will remain united."
The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by the deputy mayor of Jerusalem and other dignitaries.
