Israeli troops, having withdrawn to new defensive positions in Southern Lebanon earlier this month, are continuing to react with force to attacks mounted virtually daily by Lebanese based guerrillas. On February 24, Israeli helicopters and ground units staged a reprisal raid on Kfar Sir Village, near Nabatiyeh, in the wake of persistent Shi'ite Moslem strikes at Israeli Defence Force (IDF) troops and positions. IDF forces have suffered more than six hundred soldiers killed since Israel's military was ordered into Lebanon by the then Defence Minister Ariel Sharon in 1972 - a daily toll which has provoked intense anger and debate within Israel itself. Last week, guerrilla attacks claimed the lives of two high-ranking Israeli officers; the Nabatiyeh region strikes were one response to these casualties. Meanwhile, Palestinians living in Chatila refugee camp - which, with the Sabra camp, took the full brunt of a Christian revenge raid in September, 1982 - staged a protest on February 24 against the accord signed recently in Amman, Jordan, between King Hussein and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, pledging closer co-operation on efforts to achieve a Middle East peace settlement. An anti-Arafat Palestinian faction, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), led by George Habash, organised the Chatila rally, which passed a camp memorial to the hundreds of Palestinians massacred in the 1982 attack.
