One woman died and several people were wounded on May 17 during the second day of disturbances at the Ain Al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in Southern Lebanon. The disturbances followed a search of the camp on May 15 by the Israeli Army. An Army spokesman claimed weapons found. Several arrests were made. The camp's residents claimed the army used explosives to blow down doors in the house-to-house search. Twenty six thousand people live in the camp. A strike was called in protest and violence broke out in the camp the following day, apparently during a demonstration against the raid. On May 17, shooting broke out at the camp and one woman died. She was identified as 38-year-old Fadila Mustafa Rashed. The Israeli Army denied responsibility. However, some camp residents claimed Israeli-backed militia were responsible for the death. Later, there were reports that the same militia opened fire on a group of teenagers who gathered to take the woman's body to Sidon for burial. The group chanted slogans and threw stones at the militia, but eventually dispersed. The body was taken to Sidon by the Red Cross. One camp resident said Israeli claims that there were terrorist in the camp were untrue. He added that it was peaceful place, and claimed it was the Israelis who caused the trouble.
In Vienna, an officials of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said reports he had received indicated a woman died of shock during the disturbances on May 17, and two people had died from gunshot wounds on May 15.
