A ban imposed on the Gaza fishing fleet was lifted on July 7. Fishermen has been prevented from working since July 3 when restrictions were imposed by Israeli forces for undisclosed security reasons. Some fishermen have been suspected of drug smuggling and assisting Palestinian prisoners who have escaped from Gaza jail. Rajab Mohamad el Hiessei, the head of the Fisherman's Union spoke to reporters about the lifting of the ban. About 2,000 local families make their living out of the fishing industry and fish in an important export. The last fishing ban, which lasted for 28 days in May, cost the Gaza Fishing Industry an estimated 2.4 million United States dollars.
