Austrian Hubert Kusternigg won Israel's first national balloon race on Friday at the end of a three-day tournament attended by more than 40 competitors. Kusternigg won 4,000 United States dollars for first place in the international event, organised as part of celebrations marking Israel's 40th anniversary.
The 21-metre (70 foot) balloons, sailing above the dust clouds of the Negev desert, were interrupted several times by Israeli jets which flew loops around the balloonists, sometimes buzzing them.
The participants, including 19 from the United States, the world leader in balloon flying, were graded on how close they came to a certain target. Speed was not important in the event.
