- Story Text: Sharon vows to stay in power until 2007.
Israel's Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on
Thursday (January 22) he would remain in power at least
until scheduled elections in 2007. Sharon's comments came
after prosecutors said they were considering an indictment
in a bribery case.
"I came here as prime minister and the chairman of the
Likud party... a position I intend to fill for many years,
at least until 2007," Sharon told youth members of his
ruling Likud party.
Prosecutors are considering an indictment against
Sharon following charges against a businessman friend on
Wednesday (January 21) for attempting to bribe him. If
Sharon were charged analysts think he would have little
choice but to step down, but thus far no evidence has been
produced to show he knowingly accepted money for political
favours.
Sharon, leader of the right-wing Likud party, enjoys
broad support for his tough handling of a Palestinian
uprising, but this popularity has already been corroded by
the corruption scandal, set against the background of an
economic slump.
An opinion poll in the Maariv newspaper found that 53
percent of Israelis believe Sharon was involved in
misconduct and 63 percent would want him to step down if
this were proven.
