- Story Text: Israel and Mauritania have signed an agreement to
establish full diplomatic relations, the third accord of its
kind between Israel and an Arab state in over 20 years of
Middle East peacemaking.
Foreign Ministers David Levy of Israel and Ahmed
Ould Sid'ahmed of Mauritania on Thursday (October 28) signed
the deal at a State Department ceremony attended by Secretary
of State Madeleine Albright.
Levy called Mauritania's decision to join Egypt and Jordan
in establishing relations with Israel "wise and courageous".
"It broadcasts to all nations the good spirit that must exist
in our region, It's a message to all the others that the
time has come to shake hands," he added.
Ould Sid'ahmed said Mauritania's decision was one outcome
of a meeting in New York last month between Albright and the
foreign ministers of many Middle Eastern countries.
But he also said that Mauritania's position on Middle East
peace was that the Palestinians must enjoy their full rights
and that Israel must give back all occupied Arab lands.
Albright said: "It would be better if Israel did not feel
isolated in taking risks...I would hope very much that other
Arab countries would follow suit very quickly."
Albright also commented on the situation in Armenia.
