- Story Text: On a day when Palestinian commandos organised a symbolic funeral to commemorate three guerrillas killed in an operation in north Israel, a new Lebanese security organisation put on display in Beirut weapons captured during a counter Israeli raid across the border into Lebanon.
The General Command of the People's Guard, a previously unknown Palestinian group, on Thursday (24 July) displayed several explosive devices with Hebrew inscriptions. The Command claimed the weapons had been captured the previous day during the Israeli raid against the South Lebanon village of Kfar Kila.
Mr Abu Omar, a member of the Guard, said the organisation had been formed to resist Israeli attacks. It had been set up by the Lebanese Communist Party in Southern Lebanon.
During the attack on Kfar Kila, one Israeli soldier was reported killed and seven wounded before the raiders retreated back across the border taking seven prisoners with them.
The three Palestinian commandos had been killed just across the border from Kfar Kila last week--near Israel's northernmost village of Metulla. The Israelis said the three had crossed the border, heavily armed with guns and explosives, but were intercepted in an orchard near Metulla. The three men were killed during a fierce gunbattle. One Israeli soldier was wounded.
Thursday's symbolic funeral for the three commandos was organised by the Palestine Popular Struggle Front at the Shatila camp just outside Beirut.
