Israel's national basketball team achieved a heart-stopping victory against Czechoslovakia at Yad Eliyahu Stadium, Tel Aviv on February 13. The Israelis left it to a Mickey Berkowitz basket seven seconds from time to give his team a narrow two-point win and a place in the World Cup finals in Spain. With just two-and-a-half minutes to go, after Israel had squandered a 14-point lead to the experienced Czechs. Then the visitors' star, Stanislav Kropilak, was lured into a fifth foul by the brilliant Doron Jamchee, who hit the two penalty baskets to lift him one point above Korpilak's 32 points. The fast-paced game was watched by Israel's Prime Minister Shimon Peres. Israel's top scorers were Jamche with 34 and Berkowitz with 23.
