- Story Text: Fresh clashes have erupted between Palestinians and
Israeli troops in the Gaza Strip and West Bank on a "day of
rage" called to coincide with an Arab summit in Cairo.
A 35-year-old Palestinian taxi driver was killed in the
West Bank town of Hebron on Saturday (October 21), apparently
by a stray bullet as he cleaned his car in a street adjoining
an area where Israeli soldiers and Palestinian gunmen exchange
fire.
Gaza hospital officials said a 15-year-old Palestinian
youth was killed and at least 60 Palestinians were wounded in
fighting at several flashpoints after a truce negotiated by
U.S. President Bill Clinton on Tuesday collapsed on Friday.
In Jerusalem, Israeli government spokesman Nachman Shai
said Israel had expected the rise in violence during the Arab
summit in Cairo. He said "...this rise in violence is all
predictable towards the summit and while the summit is on. We
expected it. But once it happened it is something - we cannot
accept it We are totally against it."
Shai accused Palestinian leaders of violating human rights
because they sent their children out on the streets during the
unrest.
The Israeli government spokesman said: "When they speak
about human rights I think that they ignore one - very
important one - it is the right to live and like sending the
Palestinian children into the streets - I think he abuses
the - He is the first not to respect human rights."
