- Story Text: Hizbollah have welcomed Israel's decision to withdraw
from south Lebanon as a victory for the guerrilla movement and
for Lebanon.
In an interview on Monday (March 6) Hizbollah MP Ammar
Almosawi declared the Israeli announcement of the withdrawal a
"victory for Lebanon and the resistance."
The Hizbollah movement has led the fight to drive Israeli
troops out of the occupation zone it has occupied for 22
years.
Israel announced on Sunday (March 5) that it would leave
by July, even if there is no agreement with Syria that would
guarantee a smooth withdrawal and peaceful border.
Hizbollah, which drove Israeli public opinion to demand a
withdrawal by killing seven Israeli soldiers in less than
three weeks earlier this year, has never said if it will
continue the fight against Israel.
But citizens of a village on the frontline with Israel
received with mistrust Israel's decision to withdraw from its
occupation zone by July.
Israel, which controlled parts of Lebanon since 1978,
carved out the zone in 1985 ostensibly to protect its borders
against potential guerrilla attacks.
Those living inside the zone, and already suffering
economic hardships, expressed similar fears to their fellow
Lebanese outside the strip.
