- Story Text: A Palestinian commando leader claimed in Beirut on Thursday (June 20) that at least 27 people died and 105 were wounded during Israeli reprisal attacks in southern Lebanon. The strikes were against Palestinian refugee camps in the area from where, the Israelis claim, the guerrillas launch their attacks on settlements in northern Israel.
In announcing the death toll, Zuhair Muhsen, a member of the palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) warned Israel that if the attacks continued, the Palestinians would be forced to revise an earlier decision on the cessation of operations against Israel from Syrian and Lebanese territory. The PLO says the present attacks aren't carried out from the areas Israel is bombing.
The attacks on Thursday were the third in as many days. The targets were camps near the coastal towns of Tyre and Sidon. More than 50 homes were destroyed. The victims were mainly women and small children. The wounded were carried in convoys of ambulances to hospitals in Beirut. The Palestinians claim the attacking aircraft used napalm, canon fire and bombs.
The strikes began only hours after President Nixon left Jordan for the United States after his peace mission to the Middle East. The attacks were in retaliation for the latest guerrilla action against Kibutz Shamir where three women and four commandos died.
