- Story Text: Hizbollah Islamic fundamentalists accused Israel of
planting a roadside bomb in south Lebanon which killed four
people, including a child and an officer of the Israeli-backed
South Lebanon Army on Thursday.
A woman was led through the streets of Jezzine wailing
on Friday (May 14) as she attended the funeral of a woman and
child killed in an explosion.
The roadside bomb went off in the Jezzine enclave on
Thursday (May 13), killing an officer in the Israeli-run South
Lebanon Army (SLA), a child and two women.
A third woman was seriously wounded, a source in the
Israeli-funded SLA said. The civilian victims were all
believed related to the officer.
A second funeral took place in the village of Kfarfila,
where hundred of mourners followed the coffin of Abbas Zein.
Hizbollah's Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem
said in an interview with Reuters on Friday (May 14) that
"Following the Israeli failure to carry out direct attacks,
they tried the indirect methods"...it carried out the Jezzine
massacre with the aim of evading responsibility for its
involvement in the south."
Hizbollah also held funerals for two Moslem guerrillas
killed by Israeli air attacks on its bases on Thursday.
The fighting comes four days before Israelis vote in an
election where its occupation of southern Lebanon -- and the
steady death toll its forces suffer -- has been an issue.
The deaths in south Lebanon represented the highest toll
in a 24-hour period since Israeli jets killed a Lebanese woman
and her six children in December.
Only one civilian had been killed in south Lebanon
fighting this year until the latest violence.Under a 1996
agreement, both sides were to avoid inflicting civilian casualties.
The air attack near the village of Majdal Silm that killed
the two Hizbollah men was Israel's 53rd of the year.
Hizbollah (Party of God) leads a guerrilla campaign to end
Israel's occupation of south Lebanon.Israel, defying a United
Nations resolution, has occupied parts of the south since 1978
and set up the "security zone" , saying it needed to prevent
cross-border attacks.
