- Story Text: The settlements of Kfar Shouba and Nabatiyeh in southern Lebanon were both severely damaged during Israeli retaliation raids on Sunday and the early hours of Monday morning ( 15 and 16 June). One woman was reported killed in the village of Kfar Shouba and others injured. No casualties were recorded in the Nabatiyeh raid.
The Israeli attack followed an Arab guerrilla raid on a farmhouse in northern Israel on Sunday morning. Four Arab guerrillas and two Israeli civilians were killed when Israeli troops stormed the house in which the guerrillas were keeping a family hostage.
Hours later, Israeli aircraft attacked Kfar Shouba, and Israeli artillery began shelling the hills of southern Lebanon. The raid on the town of Nabatiyeh occurred just after midnight and lasted for about one hour. Local residents said twenty shells hit the town, destroying three houses and badly damaging thirty more.
United Nations troops stationed in the area visited Kfar Shouba and Nabatiyeh on Monday to survey the extent of the damage and to assess the type of artillery shells used.
Further Arab attacks on civilian centres along the Israeli border have taken place. The incidents occurred as Israel's Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin concluded his round on Middle East discussions with United States' President Gerald Ford in Washington.
SYNOPSIS: The village of Kfar Shouba in southern Lebanon ... scene of an Israeli air attack on Sunday in which one woman was reported killed and more injured. The raids followed an Arab guerrilla attack on a farmhouse in northern Israel early on Sunday morning. United Nations troops visited Kfar Shouba later in the day to assess the damage ... and the type of shells used in the air attack.
The shelling of Kfar Shouba -- hours after Israeli troops had countered the Arab guerrilla attack -- was one of a series of raids on Lebanese settlements close to the border with Israel during Sunday afternoon and evening.
Shortly after midnight, the town of Nabatiyeh also came under attack. Local residents said twenty shells hit the settlement, destroying three houses and damaging thirty more. No casualties were reported.
Fresh Arab artillery attacks took place during the day on Monday along Israel's northern border. The incidents occurred as Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin concluded talks with President Ford in Washington.
