A total of 692 triathletes from 11 countries took part in the first international triathlon in Eilat on November 28. After swimming 1.5 kilometres, cycling 40 kilometres and running a further 10 kilometres, the comfortable winner of the men's event was Ken Glah from the United States (US). Glah is ranked fifth in the world but has beaten all those ranked above him at some stage in his career. He completed the course at Eilat in a time of one hour 57 minutes 15 seconds. West Germany's Wolfgang Dietrich finished second, three minutes 24 seconds behind Glah, after holding the lead for much of the event. Ben van Zelst from the Netherlands finished in third place. First place in the women's event went to Sarah Coope of Great Britain in a time of two hours 22 minutes and 18 seconds.
