- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has visited British
Prime Tony Blair in London for talks on Middle East stability.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak was in London Tuesday
(November 23), for discussions on the current Israeli
withdrawals in the occupied territories. He expected a dispute
with Palestinians over a delayed West Bank land handover to be
resolved within days.
Barak, speaking after talks in London with British Prime
Minister Tony Blair, said the deadlock over the transfer of
five percent of West Bank land to Palestinian rule could be
quickly overcome. He promised that Israel would implement a
further withdrawal from the West Bank, due to begin in
January, "exactly according to the agreement, exactly on time".
The Israeli pullback is already a week overdue, as the
sides wrangle over the areas to be handed over.Palestinians
say they want more populated areas near Jerusalem.Israel says
it has the right to decide which land it will transfer to
Palestinian rule.
Barak, who has been on a week-long trip to Turkey, the
United States and Britain, was due to head home from Britain
late on Tuesday after addressing a meeting of the United
Jewish Appeal fund in London.
