After an 11-week lull Israeli planes on November 27 resumed air raids over Lebanon, striking at Palestinian guerrilla positions in Syrian-controlled terrain East of Beirut. An Israeli army spokesman said the raid was aimed at bases in the village of Qab Elias, which he claimed were used by the Radical Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) as launching pads for attacks on Israeli forces in South Lebanon.
In Beirut, the Christian Falangist radio said six planes took part in the attack, wounding several people and starting fires. This was the first raid since the multi-party coalition of Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres took office. In the previous week, the Israeli death toll in South Lebanon was said to have climbed to 603. Talks on withdrawing the estimated 12,000 Israeli troops there have run into serious difficulties. Israeli is pressing Lebanon to agree to security arrangements before it withdraws, but the Beirut government has rejected Israeli's plan for a U.N. peacekeeping force to police the area between the Awali and Zahrani rivers.
