Ethiopian couples have undergone traditional Ethiopian Jewish marriage ceremonies in protest at the refusal of the Israel Chief Rabbinate to accord them full Jewish status. Ever since some 10,000 Ethiopian Jews, or Falashas, were airlifted from drought-stricken Ethiopia more than a year ago, they have been fighting religious authorities in Israel for recognition. The Chief Rabbinate has demanded compulsory immersion for all Ethiopian Jews in order to undergo conversion. The Falashas say all their actions respect the laws of Halacha, traditional Jewish law. Some of the couples at the ceremonies were expecting their first children. The ceremonies were performed by the Kasim, or Ethiopian Jewish priest.
