About 200 clowns, painters, singers and dancers parade through the streets of east Jerusalem on May 8 to mark the second anniversary of the Palestinian theatre group, Al-Haquati. The independent group has fought repeated attempts by Israeli security forces to stop the parade. The group has also received pressure from Palestinian people who do not agree with its liberal style of performance. Theatre group manager Anis Al-Qaq said the parade was organised to show that Palestinians have a distinct culture and deserve a homeland. Police closed off the streets of east Jerusalem to traffic to allow the parade to proceed from the Damascus Gate of the Old City to the group's theatre. The parade was allowed to take place on the condition that no political speeches were made and no Palestinian flags were carried.
