- Story Text: ANATA REFUGEE CAMP, EAST JERUSALEM
Israeli police and border guards fired tear gas grenades to disperse a crowd of stone-throwing Palestinian youths at the Anata refugee camp, East Jerusalem on Wednesday. An Israeli border guard then slapped, punched and kicked a Palestinian suspect while taking him into custody.
At least 356 Palestinians and 14 Israelis have died in an uprising that started in December 1987 in the Israeli-occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The revolt is said to be co-ordinated by underground leaders linked to the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO).
The Israeli Parliament last week passed a resolution supporting talks with Palestinians who recognised Israel, renounced "terrorism", and accepted United Nations (UN) Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338. But it ruled out negotiations with the PLO.
