- Story Text: Pope John Paul is to walk in the footsteps of Jesus's
ministry around the Sea of Galilee on Friday (March 23).
The Pope will hold a mass for an expected 100,000
worshippers, at an open-air site with breathtaking views over
the Mount of Beatitudes and the Sea of Galilee.
Following is a guide to the religious sites that
the Pope will visit during his historic journey in the
footsteps of Jesus around the Sea of Galilee.
KORAZIM - The mass site, is near the small town of
Korazim. The new Testament mentions Korazim as a place where
Jesus preached and later cursed because its inhabitants
rejected his teachings.
MOUNT OF BEATITUDES - A tree-covered rise just above the
northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, this is where
tradition holds that Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount.
Its verses all begin "Blessed are..." Visited by Pope Paul VI
in 1964, the site has an Italian-built church dating from 1937
and tranquil gardens looking out over the lake. The Pope will
meet Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak at a hospice on the
site run by Franciscan nuns.
TABGHA - Just down from the Mount of Beatitudes in Tabgha
on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, this is the site
Christians revere as the place where Jesus performed the
miracle of the loaves and fishes.A church built of Jerusalem
stone in 1982 and run by German Benedictine monks stands on
the site where Jesus is said to have taken five loaves and two
fishes and multiplied them to feed 5,000 people.A small rock
on which tradition holds that the miracle occurred juts out
beneath the altar. The Pope will pay a private visit to the
church.
CAPERNAUM - Also on the Sea of Galilee in the ancient
settlement of Capernaum, this is the traditional site of the
house of the disciple Peter. The Pope will pay a private visit
to view the exposed ruins of a building dating from the 1st
century BC that is purported to be the dwelling and the
remains of early Christian churches.A concrete church built
in 1990 is built on a platform over the ruins.Capernaum is
the town where
Jesus moved from Nazareth and was the hub of his ministry. The
ruins of a 3rd century synagogue built of white limestone
stand in view of the House of Saint Peter.
