- Story Text: Some 30 Palestinian prisoners have been freed by the Israeli
government as a gesture to mark the end of the Moslem month of
Ramadan.
The first group of Palestinian prisoners were released
on Sunday (January 17).
Ten more Palestinian prisoners were handed over by Israel
to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank town of Ramallah
on Tuesday (January 19).
None of those freed had committed heavy security offences
nor was the prisoners' release connected to the Wye River
interim peace deal, which has been put on hold.
Israel and the Palestinian Authority have been at odds
over the staged releases of 750 prisoners promised under the
Wye deal.
Israel last year released 250 prisoners but Palestinians,
who expected Israel to free countrymen convicted of
nationalist offences, were angered by the inclusion of 150
common criminals.
Israel says it will not free Palestinians involved in
bloody attacks on its citizens or who belong to militant
Islamic organisations.
