Judges at the Artur Rubinstein Piano competition in Israel failed to select a winner this year, the first time this has happened in the history of the prestigious competition. The final was held in Tel Aviv on April 17, and although the judges thought the quality of musicianship was high, they said the contestants fell below the required standard of excellence in other areas.Second prize was awarded to 27-year-old Thomas Duis from Hanover, West Germany, who began playing the piano at the age of five.Canadian Angela Cheng was awarded third, and fourth was shared between 21-year-old Matthias Fletzberger of Austria and Hans-Christian Wille, another West German, also from Hanover.Katya Manor, who is on the organising committee for the competition, said that of the 110 pianists who applied for the competition, 50 were invited to take part, but only 34 turned up.Each contestants was required to play two full recitals, a selection of chamber music and two concertos by Mozart and Beethoven. The pianists were accompanied by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.A sketch of Artur Rubinstein, drawn by Pablo Picasso, graced the stage behind the orchestra to remind everyone of the composer whose name is given to the competition.Rubinstein, who would have been 100 this year, was one of this century's most famous concert pianist, who died in Geneva four years ago.He gave his first public performance at the age of 11 and went on to play thousands of concerts all over the world.
