- Story Text: Israeli Cabinet ministers on Sunday (March 15) expressed their anger at allegations that the country illegally re-sold United States (U.S.) military technology to other countries. They called the reports a "smear campaign" to undermine vital relations with Washington.
U.S. officials said they were looking into the reports that Israel contravened agreements on the transfer of weapons technology to such countries as China, Thailand and possibly South Africa.
Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the reports "an obvious campaign aimed at denigrating Israel and sabotaging its relations with the United States".
Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Arens was photographed last year during what was described as a secret visit to China. The visit followed long term U.S. suspicions that China and Israel had secret deals to cooperate on military technology.
The Washington Times newspaper last week reported that Israel may have shared Patriot anti-missile technology with China. Israel strongly denied the suggestion, but U.S. administration officials said they were investigating it.
The row over military technology has exacerbated already tense relations between Israel and the United States, its chief ally and supplier of aid.
Their relationship already suffers from a dispute over Israel's request for 10 billion U.S. dollars in loan guarantees to integrate immigrants from the former Soviet Union.
